Zimanga Photo Safari

16th July 2017
Earlier this year I spent 2 sessions in the Lagoon Hide at Zimanga Game Reserve.

The first Morning we got there early before the sun was up and in the morning light we photographed a Grey Heron as it was starting the days fishing activities, we tried silhouette as well as fill flash images, the mountain and sunrise colours providing a beautiful backdrop.

As the day progressed the Local Crocodile made a appearance, it was amazing to see and photograph this prehistoric predator at eye level only a few meters away. Later on in the morning we photographed a variety of birds that came to feed near the hide as well as a pair of Pied Kingfishers that provided us with some action. It seemed like minutes but in fact we had been in the hide for 4 hours and it was time to head back home for breakfast.

Later that afternoon we returned to the Lagoon hide, the light is from the opposite side in the afternoons and we were now shooting with the light. The main action for the afternoon were two Crocodiles that were competing for some food scarps and space, the big Croc from the morning was dominating a smaller Croc, there were a few times when the Crocs had a brief interaction with each other and the smaller of the two always gave way to the bigger one.

The bird activity was quieter on this particular afternoon but the time passed just as quickly and soon the sun was setting and it was time to head back to our lodging for the night.

It had been a amazing day at Zimanga and the Lagoon hide is a fantastic experience, we had gotten images that we had never expected were possible. I will definitely return someday in the future.
