Kirkmans photo Safari

24th July 2017
I Spent a day with Jonathan and Mandy from Texas, I helped them with their Wildlife photography and getting a better understanding on the technical side of things.

After doing some theory and setting up their Cameras for the best results we set off on drive, the first Animals we encountered were a journey of Giraffe, a group of 5 animals that were feeding on the trees, we spent quite some time with them and we got some nice images of a female as she stretched up to feed off the high branches of a Marula Tree.

After leaving the giraffe we spent some time photographing some general game, a beautiful young Waterbuck calf as well as a Male Impala using a Termite mound to scan the area.

We then stopped to photograph a couple of Giant Plated Lizards as they lay on the rock, it was at this point when we heard that the Charlston Male Lions had been found so we headed off in their direction. When we arrived at the Lions it was already dark so we changed our cameras into Manual mode to photograph using the spotlight. For the next 20 Minutes we spent time watching and photographing the 2 lions as they moved along the road, scent marking as they went, it was great to see. Eventually the lions moved into a thicket and we lost sight of them so we headed back to camp for dinner.

The following morning Jonathan and Mandy wanted to try and find some Buffalo, it was the only member of the Big 5 that they had not yet seen so we set off to try and find some.Along the way we photographed a big male Giraffe that was crossing the Sand River, we photographed him as he moved through the reeds and water, a bit later on we photographed a majestic Male Kudu as it moved across a open area.

We spent some time tracking a small herd of buffalo and after a good effort the ranger and tracker managed to find a small herd of Buffalo, the Buffalo were not very active and this gave us a good opportunity to photograph them, one female in particular was keeping her eye on us which made for some nice portraits of her.

Finally it was time to head back to the lodge for breakfast and it was time for Jonathan and Mandy to start their long journey home, it had been a good few drives at Kirkmans.
