Ithala Game Reserve

06th August 2017
In March of 2017 I decided to go and Visit Ithala Game Reserve in Kwazulu Natal, I had never been there and I am always wanting to visit the lesser know Game Reserves in South Africa.

Ithala is next to the Town of Louwsburg, there is not a lot happening at Louwsburg and I was glad we had stocked up on supplies at the Town of Pongola, about 100km away.

We were staying in a self catering Chalet in Ntshondwe Lodge, the Chalet was great,it had everything we needed and the Game reserve was not very busy either.

You do however need to be careful to keep your Chalet door closed as the Monkeys will steal any food lying around inside the Chalet.

We stayed in Ithala for 3 nights, it is a mountainous and hilly reserve with a few big open grassland areas dotted around, the reserve is easy to navigate and you will require a 4 x 4 vehicle to drive on all the roads.

If you are wanting to see the Big 5 then Ithala is not for you, they have Elephants on the reserve that were quite grumpy and we avoided them, one Bull Elephant in particular chased every vehicle he saw.

There was quite a lot of General game in Ithala and we did get some good photos of Giraffe and Zebra, there are a number of beautiful lookout points in Ithala where you can take in the view and relax, there is also a beautiful Picnic site on the Pongola river.

The bird watching was pretty good and there is a nice mix of Bushveld and grassveld birding.

I enjoyed our time at Ithala, it is a beautiful and relaxing reserve if you are not wanting to see huge numbers of animals or the Big 5.
